Internet Browsing

It was only a matter of time before the hacks to access the internet on your PSP became common knowledge. With the "hidden" browser in WipEout Pure people found it possible to access any website just by changing some DNS settings.

Now it's gone one small step forward. Someone has created a small PSP homepage with links to a few favorite mobile access webpages. This makes it easy to access the internet with your PSP by only changing one DNS number in your Network Settings on the PSP.

Yesterday I was looking at my blog on my PSP. I was overjoyed...plus...this means I can access my email wherever I can find a wireless access point. The small browser has very limited support for fonts and such, but I'm sure the release of an official PSP browser will have much more supported.

p.s. The hit from my psp showed up on my counter. Odd...it's an unknown browser, imagine that :)

Crying

Last night at rehearsal we decided to have a session of just trying to cry. The Tin-Man and Dorothy are the only ones that really do have to cry, but it's a good acting exercise anyway. I ended up being the only one that could make myself cry, the closest anyone else came was Kelli and Sherilyn (Dorothy and her understudy)...when they saw me crying. I guess it has its advantages; I got lot's of "I love you, don't cry" and some hugs. There is a difference between crying in a scene and just making myself cry...crying in a scene seems to be easy although I haven't done it much yet, I listen to myself and bring out any stage fright I have in tears...pretty simple. Making myself cry on the other hand...usually leaves me drained afterwards, so when I got home last night I was a little out of it.

Drastic change of subject...back to the PSP of course. The Korean release of the PSP in May is going to have a fully functional internet browser. Good move by Sony, because apparently Korea has wireless internet access up the ying yang (pardon the pun). Course this also means that there may be a PSP software update in May to release the browser to the rest of us (just like the first update for the Japanese PSP coincided with the US release)

San Francisco Art Institute

I received a letter on Saturday from the San Francisco Art Institute. First word of the letter is "Congratulations!" you can fill in the rest. I was accepted to SFAI based on my portfolio, and I'll get my financial aid information soon after April 4th...we'll see.

Memory Stick
(background noise: Garbage - Run Baby Run)

If anyone sees a 1GB Sony Memory Stick Duo (emphasis on Duo) for under $150 that is actually in stock please let me know, hehe.

p.s. Garbage's new album is pretty good.

PSP - Playstation Portable Review (oh my god the PSP, the psp..oh my god)
(background noise: The Servant - Cells [Being played off of my PSP, also for information purposes, this song is played during the SinCity trailer but without lyrics])

Interesting Fact: This started out as a comment on Kevin's LiveJournal in response to Kevin disliking the PS2 and praising the PSP, while one of his friends is a Nintendo DS fan.

A little something on consoles: The best thing about the PS2 is DVD playback, backwards compatibility, an excellent design for a controller, and the availability of SquareSoft (or now SquareEnix) games. GameCube? It's high point is party games such as mariokart (even if the cube version is nothing compared to the 64 version) and mario party (and I guess the mario franchise period). The Xbox...well...the xbox has Halo, but apparently they fucked that up with Halo 2, because after playing it for a short time, the graphics were no where near as good as I expected and the story was horrible and unfinished. Out of console systems, give me the PS2, but a PC always has the upper hand as far as any game goes (except maybe the controls on Prince of Persia: Warrior Within...ugh).

So now on to the main event. My PSP was in my hands at 12:00 a.m. EST on March 24th, the clock on the machine was set at 12:04 and I was exploring for 2 hours after that (then I had to sleep). The PSP has graphics that are as amazing, if not MORE amazing than any console, has Gaming, Music, Video, Movie, and perhaps (pending later releases) Internet Browsing, PDA like features, and even Cellular telephone service. The screen is amazing, higher quality than any portable DVD player or any other portable device in existence. The new disc format, the UMD holds more data than a DVD of equal size would hold, and is protected from outside dangers by its plastic casing. With the purchase of a 1GB Memory Stick Duo ($120 as soon as I find one in stock) it rivals any portable media player. Not to mention the thing looks fucking amazing! My ONLY complaints about this device are 1. smudges on the screen and 2. oddly placed analog stick...other than this, I don't see how this thing could be of more perfect design, and if Sony follows up with multiple accessories this will only grow in popularity and usefulness. Another great thing about Sony is they are still making things very cross compatible between their products. The Memory Stick Duo can be plugged into a $5 adapter the size of the regular Sony Memory Stick and be used in my digital still camera AND my digital camcorder.

Here is a breakdown of some specific features that I have taken advantage of:

1. Photo: with a quick USB connection you can easily transfer photos over onto the PSP for quick viewing. I put some pictures of myself and Kevin on here and showed them to friends at rehearsal. The quality is AMAZING, you can find out the information about the picture (date taken, size, etc.) and zoom in on the picture at the click of a button.

2. Music: once again, hook up this baby to your PC via USB and transfer MP3 files over to the memory stick for easy playback. Pause, rewind, fast forward...basic controls can be used with the headphones/remote that came with the system. You can even select a song and then go back to the photo menu and browse around while listening to your music in the background.

3. Video: don't know how many times I can say this but, AGAIN hook up via USB and transfer any video files in MPEG4 format over to your memory stick and view them on the PSP, of course, to take advantage of the full screen the video would have to be in 16:9 aspect ratio.

4. Movies: I popped in Spider-Man 2 and watched about 20 minutes of it with Dorothy's understudy while waiting for our musical director to show up. The quality is equal to DVD and this will definitely be my favorite toy on the go for watching movies as soon as more are released (HellBoy, House of Flying Daggers, and others are being released on the UMD by Sony Pictures next month and other companies have signed on to release their movies on UMD). Once available, Nyco's theater add-on will provide a case/stand/speakers/battery pack in one that will allow you to place the PSP down, pop open the case, and simply watch the movie as you relax. This accessory will also increase the battery life by 200%.

5. Battery Life: Battery life is about what you would expect from any of Sony's fine hardware devices. 3 hours is the SMALLEST amount of time you're going to get on a full charge, and that would probably either be while playing a game with the WI-FI card turned on, or while watching a movie. Battery life can also last up to around 8 hours if you are using the system for audio playback.

6. Wireless Connection: The PSP has a built in 802.11b wireless adapter that can be used to play multiplayer (via an ad-hoc connection) with a friend in the room with no extra equipment, or to play with someone across the city, state, country, or world (via an infastructure connection) with the use of a wireless access point (a wireless router, or even a coffee shop that has an access point). The wireless connection also makes is possible to connect directly to Sony servers and download updates for the PSP software/os/firmware. This is only a precursor to the possibilities of internet browsing with the PSP (if things to well, I'll be able to walk into a Hot Spot anywhere and check my email with this damn thing).

7. Sound Quality: The system speakers are not impressive at all, but that can only be expected for something this small. However, do not, I repeat do not let this make you think that the PSP does not have good sound quality. Plug in the provided headphones and your rockin' to your own tunes, or engrossed in a favorite game. Sound quality is as good as anything that I've heard including my Sony Portable CD Player, Car Stereo (actually...my car stereo is probably worse quality than the PSP), computer (and trust me...I just put a nice Creative Labs sound card in there).

8. Last but not least, the prize, Gaming: As I mentioned before, the PSP's graphics rival any console. I purchased Dynasty Warriors, Need for Speed: Underground Rivals, and WipEout Pure with my system. WipEout is probably the most impressive when it comes to visuals, and is a very entertaining racer. Need for Speed has it's own in-game music menu WITH visualizers and even two music videos if you want to have even more music on the go. Dynasty Warriors (like all Dynasty Warriors) is the same repetitive, but entertaining game. All graphics look amazing, and with many more games slated for release, I don't think anyone will have a problem finding their own specific taste on this hand-held. I have had very few slow downs/lagging in game, the only time I've noticed a slowing in game play was when I was surrounded by probably more than 50 enemies in Dynasty Warriors (which is not surprising considering the PS2 does the same thing in every Dynasty Warriors 2 - 4 when you have that many enemies attacking you).

Conclusion: Overall, the PSP is beyond any expectations I could have ever had. It is simply amazing and, despite a few minor annoyances, is something that I would suggest buying to anyone with an interest in portable movies, music, gaming, and pending on the release of other accessories, other portable uses including wireless internet browsing and portable data use.

Pros: EVERYTHING
Cons: Smudgey Smudge Smudge! Odd Analog Stick placement (but you get used to it).

Price: $250 US
Package Includes: PSP System, AC Adapter, Battery, 32MB Sony Memory Stick Duo, Headphones W/ Remote, Wrist Strap, and Cleaning Cloths for the systems screen. The first million units also ship with Spider-Man 2 the movie on UMD format.
Suggested Accessories: 1GB Memory Stick Duo, Car Charger, Nyco Theater System, and Case for UMD Discs (3 Disc intec cases are very convenient).
Suggested Game Titles: WipEout Pure + whatever type of game you like.

Follow-Up: Rumours of a newly designed PS2 have started circulating. Called the PSX, this would be the third redesign of the PS2 after the original and the new "slim" design released last year in October. This "PSX" would feature the ability to interact with the PSP, have a large hard drive ranging from 80 - 250GB, and have TV recording and playback possibilities like TiVo and DVD recording possibities like the current Panasonic DVD-R system.

:'(
(background noise: Rain)

Gah..."David Benioff, the writer of the screenplay for Wolfgang Petersen's 2004 epic Troy, has been signed by Warner Bros. to pen the script for the movie Ender's Game."

That's just...sickening. Wolfgang Petersen has been slated up to direct the movie for some time now, but I never expected that people with such a lack of talent (i.e. the writers for Troy) would be chosen to put their "pen" to Ender's Game.

Also, George Lucas is now referring to Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (I still can't get over how he used this move as an excuse to use his "Revenge" title...referring to the original title of Return of the Jedi: Revenge of the Jedi...but as we all know, Revenge isn't exactly a good word when referring to Jedi...you know...with the controlling anger and all). Sorry...I got sidetracked, George Lucas is referring to Episode III as a "tear-jerker" and that he is "unconcerned" if it "draws more barbs" from current fans (once again referring to the utter insult Episodes I & II were to the original trilogy). "I never try to anticipate what the world's going to think or even worry about whether they're going to like it or not. That's not my job, to make people like my movies. They either like them or they don't. That's completely out of my hands." he said. I can respect this in some aspects, but not in most. If you are creating something for the masses, such as Star Wars, you have to bend to your audience. Even Frank Oz (who I have much more respect for as a Director and Artist) changed the ending of Little Shop of Horrors for movie audiences (the original ending consisted of Audrey II taking eating Seymour and Audrey I and taking over the world...kind of dark). Oz said that you have to understand that you are trying to entertain, in the original off-Broadway production the audience still gets to see those characters at the curtain call, but in a movie the audience doesn't get that "see, we're here" feeling. You have to bend to an audience, but I guess Lucas is not creating this movie for "entertainment" he's finishing his "creative epic" for himself and only himself...even if he does have shitty taste.

So anyway...enough about that. *don't forget to check out the Mini-Poll*

I plan to make a full review of the PSP (Playstation Portable) and it's forms of media the UMD (Universal Media Disc) and Sony Memory Stick Duo, this could be as soon as tomorrow night, but may have to wait until the weekend.

p.s. I made a simple change to my wallpaper page, discerning what was actually created by me and what is more fanart and copyrighted material.

Progress

Well, I started going through each post to change the code. I have made it back to July 26, 2004...right after I moved here actually. I'm writing down a few posts that I still need to change the code of, I just don't have the images here so I can't link them until I get home. So I'm making progress...even though I still have to make it back to January of 2003.

Back to rehearsal tonight, we'll be learning music though, so it will be really easy.

Anyway...I'll post more later.

p.s. Holy crap the UMD disc that the Sony PSP uses is small. 2.5" wide...kind of like a mini-disc...but A LOT more space and better looking, plus no metal moving parts.

Oh Bother

Now here comes the hard part...I am actually going to sift through every single one of my blog posts and change any code in them that refer to the old server. I just want to get rid of MyEdesk all together so I don't have to deal with it, also so I can have everything really simply on the new server. I was unable to use ftp on MyEdesk, so now that I can, it will be much easier to upload files, and keep a record of what I actually have on the server. So that's nice eh? I have a feeling pretty soon I'll actually host the blog's main page there as well, but that may have to wait.

So bear with me if any images don't load, I went ahead and did the last few posts so nothing's missing on the first page, but all my older posts have no images now (unfortunately myedesk took my request to delete about 4 files as a request to delete all the files in one of the folders...so...yeah, have to restore all that crap)

Transfer

I am currently in the process of moving all my blog graphics and pages over to a different server. I was using MyEdesk.org which is a Utah school associated server that I joined via one of my english teachers in high school. MyEdesk was pretty decent considering I got 75MB of free space, it went down a few times, but was usually back up again within a day or two.

So now I am going to be using clasheerian.com which is run by Asher (danke Asher!). $20 every 6 months for the hosting, which is a great deal so if any of you need a good server I suggest going to Clasheerian and getting in touch.

Now then, I have a favor to ask many of you (or any of you). Since I am moving all of these files over to a different server, I could very well miss one or two (or three...or four...etc) files along the way, there's around 20 pages of code (most of it quite simple) that I have to go through and make sure that all the links and image src code is corrected for the new server. The favor that I ask is this: if you are coming to my blog and have a little time, check out the links under "On Blogocide" on my sidebar and just look around for fun. If by chance you see an image that doesn't load, or a link that doesn't work (or you see anything with the phrase "mydesk.org" in it...) please notify me by leaving a comment or emailing me at cathexist@gmail.com thank you thank you thank you. (this will also give you a change to look around at my new movie pages...which *cough* still need to be worked on quite a bit).

Bass
(background noise: Toy Story)

Ok...after some serious computer problems (that still need to be fixed...but I'm workin on it) I've finally been able to get on the net. I need to replace two of my hard drives (luckily I have...what?...4?) and probably my motherboard, neither of which being my fault. I believe the warranty is still valid on them though, so I'll be calling both companies during this week. So anyway, I finally have gotten the pictures of my bass up. So...here they are.

More Oz?

Working hard on Oz, things are falling into place a little better now. Unfortunately I found out that the understudies, which there are now actually two of (they announced a new understudy for Dorothy last night), are doing the school performance. That is kind of a bummer for me, and also kind of a bummer for the rest of the quartet, cause they um...*cough*...don't really like my understudy, lol...or they just love me...or a combination of the two (or something or other).

We got posters for the production...they...um...are (this is me trying to be nice about it) horrible. I'm working with our assistant-director to try and get my poster in circulation instead of this one which is...pretty pathetic.

I hope that we can run through our dances soon, especially the Jitterbug since we haven't learned any of it except for a few lifts that we might do, plus we haven't gone through either of the lion's songs (If I Only Had The Nerve and King of the Forest). I have some pictures of experimenting with lifting up our choreographer (unfortunately none of me, no one grabbed my camera...but I have some good ones of Lion lifting her over his head).

I also have received my fender fretless jazz bass in the mail. I shall put up pictures of that during the weekend, hopefully tonight.

p.s. Kevin! Don't go see Adelle! Come see meeeeee! It'll be much less depressing (well...actually, if you came at the beginning or during the middle of April...it would be pretty depressing, cause I'll be on the verge of killing something)...but end of April or beginning of May...WOO!...beach!

Graphic Design

Gah...I have the desire to do some graphic design, but I have no time. I wish I had a few days to just kind of relax and then get into designing some web sites and such. I want to help out with Center Stage Theater's website, but I have little time already. I also kind of wish I had a laptop, it would make things a lot easier in some ways. If I could bring that to rehearsal or something like that; I could get immediate input from the people that are building the webpage, and I could design things right there for them.

I'll look into the laptop later though.

Bad Luck

Recently I've had some bad luck, a few things...but this is one of many. Last night I got a flat tire, and since I have to work today...can't get it fixed until right after work. Got a ride to work, but now just remembered that I kind of need to go around for some things today. Hopefully I can take care of this in the morning. Gah...there are other more serious things, but this is the one that's annoying me the most at the moment.

So anyway, I'm at work...taking my lunch break at the moment. I usually go home but...no car.

Played tennis yesterday for the first time in around 8 months...fun. Although it wasn't really a challenge :P

Saw Robots last night, had some good laughs, wish there was more Mel Brooks in it. After the movie there was the flat tire, so Brian (the lion, I played tennis with him and his fiance and went to Robots with them) helped (and by helped I mean basically did the entire thing) change my tire so I could at least drive home. We had a good scream of "Kahn!!!" and that made the night.

Rehearsals are going so-so...I'm the only one with an understudy at the moment. Two understudies had to take over parts, and one quit...so I was left with the only one. This is overall a bad thing, because I have a shadow during rehearsal. I can't get into character development and it's hard to even block some scenes because he's basically standing there as a 5th person instead of our little quartet. He's a cool guy...but he gets in the way (which is mostly the directors fault...he even had us saying lines at the same time one night...which really doesn't do wonders for acting/blocking).

Center Stage Theater
(background noise: Doctor Who - [Opening Title Theme, 1970])

So I have finally gotten around to uploading pictures and linking them. We'll start out with my two posters and prop work. In english reading order: (1.) Oz poster I created last night, (2.) Phantom of the Opera poster that I created as a gift to Sandra Evans, our director for The Man Who Came to Dinner (she's obsessed with Phantom of the Opera, and the man who plays the Phantom in the movie...the Butler dude)...also keep in mind that the poster was actually printed at 12" by 18" so it looked pretty impressive (3.) 1940s Time Magazine cover with Sheridon Whiteside (from The Man Who Came to Dinner, played by John. Also: Had to be in black and white, the show began in black and white and we slowly added color to costumes and the set) (4.) Original picture of John

Now, we have some pictures from rehearsal for The Wizard of Oz. I'll let you guess on the descriptions.

And last but not least, some pictures from rehearsal for The Man Who Came to Dinner

What is the most interesting hyphenated word you can think of?

p.s. I will get the pictures for Oz rehearsal up tonight, either before I go to rehearsal or right when I get back (in other words, by midnight tonight), along with the poster for The Phantom of the Opera that I made as our director's gift for The Man Who Came to Dinner and a Wizard of Oz poster that I made last night (simpler than the phantom one, but very nice).

Tin-Man
(background noise: The Wizard of Oz - If I Only Had a Heart)

We started working on the dance for "If I Only Had a Heart" last night, it was a lot of fun, but I'm having trouble remembering one part of it. I burned a copy of the song for myself and I'm going to be playing it in my car all weekend and running the moves through my head and practicing at home as well. It's a pretty simple dance, and only one of the transition steps is hard. I just have to work on keeping every part of my body stiff and only letting one part of my body move at a time. I had Brian (the Lion) take some pictures during rehearsal, so I'll post some pictures of learning the dance real soon.

This weekend I really have to start reading through the script and watch the movie. This week has been long and tiring, so I have some catching up to do during the weekend with a few things.

I should probably hear something from the San Francisco Art Institute in about a month. They still needed one of my transcripts and another recommendation letter (that I think wasn't written/sent by one of the people that agreed to write one). So I asked Cathy Stelly, the president of Center Stage Theater and my director during The Homecoming. So all that's taken care of. They also sent me a nice little booklet explaining their departments with some interesting artwork in them.

Ditz

You know...you'd think if people had all of their financial records and business information in a computer they would take a little more time to know how the computer works and where things are located on it.

I would imagine that the fear of losing years and years of personal and professional data would inspire some people to research what is HOLDING that information.

I would never trust my information in a data source that I did not at least somewhat understand the basis of its working and browsing through it's contents.

Sunglasses

Hmm...I found some nice sunglasses on the ground the other day...no scratches, really comfortable, perfect shade.

Today I looked to see if I could find what kind they are. They are Brooks Brothers Eyewear B.B. 598-S. $70 - $100 sunglasses...not too shabby eh?

I just need to replace the battery in my nice watch and I'll be set.

And I need to get a tie clip...but I can never find one I like, and they all seem to cost $22. If I'm going to spend that much on a little piece of metal, I want to at least like it. Any suggestions out there? Anyone know a good tie clip, or site with tie clips? lol

Parents/Wizard
(background noise: Gustavo Santaolalla - De Usuahia a la Quiaca [The Motorcycle Diaries Soundtrack])

Ok then, I just got back from dropping off my parents at the airport. Had a really nice time while they were here for my grandfather's birthday and such. It was great to have everyone together for the first time in around 10 years.

The cast was revealed for Wizard of Oz on Saturday. It was frustrating, I got the call right as Constantine started in the movie theater, my phone vibrated and I ran out to answer it, I missed it...got a message to call back, I tried right then...and it was already busy getting in touch with everyone else. So I am...ta-da...the Tin-Man, which I am very happy about. A kid came in and read for scarecrow and was great, he got the part. My friend Brian is the Lion...the cast is pretty fun. There's no playing around with the production, we have our schedule already, books, locations, and we have to be ready to work hard. I knew I was tin-man about 3 minutes after I read for the part...the part just fits me more than the scarecrow...even if I am tall, skinny, and semi-lerpy. Course my costume will be quite interesting.

The show is the last two weeks of April, they moved the production up a week because of the Paramount fire so they could do it at Dillard school auditorium, which supposively has a large stage (I've never seen it).
