Over the last three days I had a trip to Salt Lake City to participate in the UMEA (Utah Music Educators Association) 2003 State Honor Choir. It was very enlightening; nice to work with a professional director and be part of a large group of singers. We sang in the Tabernacle, in Temple Square, which is an amazing place to go even if you're not Mormon, or even religious at all. However, it seems that if you aren't religious, you're not as welcome as the strict mormons that are frequent to this location. I was walking with my two friends, one of them mormon, the other atheist/agnostic like me, through the square and for some odd reason my atheist friend said "damn." The immediate reaction of my Mormon friend was "Did you just cuss in Temple Square?" There is of course that age old saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," but honestly, this isn't Rome, this is the United States of America, where people do have rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, just to name a few. Although I may not have the most outstanding respect for my county, I do find our rights to be an exceptional priveledge in this world. So since this is the USA, shouldn't I have the right to scream (if for some odd reason I would wish to) "FUCK" in the center of Temple Square without consiquence? I find it odd that other religions or non-religions aren't allowed to say what they want when we have to take part in any custom of the Mormon church, such as prayer, if attending an event. I really don't see how people can be so offended by my own morals and beliefs and then just turn around and try to press their's on me. Not many people think about it both ways...it does work both ways...

Additional: A short time after I made this post, I discovered that Monday the 20th (tomorrow) is Civil Rights day...little ironic considering the nature of this post.

Have you ever noticed weird terminology like "openly" or "just happens" as in openly gay or just happens to be black. Do they work the other direction? Openly black, just happens to be gay? Here's a good one for you: Colin Powell is not openly black, Colin Powell is openly white...he just happens to be black.

Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of watching Governor George Ryan of Illinois, former Governor as of today, announced that he had taken all the inmates on death row in the state and changed their sentences to life in prison. I think that this is an amazing leap forward in the justice system. Gov. Ryan expressed what his views on the subject have been over the past few years and had come to the decision that the death penalty is, excuse the wording, but a kick back to the stone-age. We share the death penalty ONLY with other 3rd world countries, let's get with the times people. Although our executions are not as outrageous as beheading or hanging (although they were), there is no excuse for a pointless act of revenge, that's right, revenge. That's all the death penalty is, some can believe in "an eye for an eye" as in the Bible, but how is that an excuse for taking a man's life. Besides, 13 inmates in the state of Illinois have been released from death row because of new evidence, mostly new methods of dna testing. We need to obolish this horrible act before more innocent blood is shed. Oh, and one more thing...what is the point of swabbing an inmate's arm with alcohol (sorry if that's spelled wrong, I've always been horrible at that word) before commencing a lethal injection? are they going to get sick from countless jailhouse germs on their arm seconds before highly toxic liquids flow through their bloodstream...the entire idea of ALL death penalties is a JOKE.

Well, looks like I got this whole thing wrong, I've been using blogger.com as a way of keeping a sort of "online diary" when what I should be doing is voicing my opinions...Like my recent personal attack posts and Cari's blog (which has now become some sort of slow chatting process 8 comments all directed towards individuals) So from now on...I'll post things with a little more depth...starting....now

...d'oh

Just got back from the high school basketball games; we won 2 out of 3 games, which is amazing for just about anything Moab. Can't remember the scores, I was kinda busy...but at least I picked up on who won and lost. In other news, Adam Bresee and I now have the responsibility of designing and producing next year's daily planner for the high school. Never thought they would find some sort of slave labor for little nerds like us, but apparently it's easy to find and easy to enforce. Hey, you never know, maybe we can put some subliminal messages in there. Wish us luck!

Well...here I am, 4 in the morning at Ben's house...not that exciting. But hey, my faithful friend Adam is at my side. I've been playing Unreal Tournament 2003 for about 4 hours and my eyes and hands are starting to hurt. I've only been playing the demo and I hope to purchase the real thing soon. I have Unreal Championship on my Xbox which is great as well, but no where near as vast as the PC version. My suggestion is find out what you're better at: Controller or Keyboard and Mouse, and use what comes naturally.

Dreams: what are they? Lately all they do is keep me from sleeping. I've been in bed the last couple nights just thinking about my previous dreams. They seem to be designing a movie for my pure entertainment, taking ideas from a wide range of my everyday tastes, books like Dune and Ender's Game and video games like Halo. Of course, this does tempt me to put all these ideas down into my own book or screenplay, but my own self-critical personality tells me not to.
